the origin post we had to have

June 17th, 2010

We didn’t want to do this. Again. But apparently there are only so many times you can post sad pictures of Brett Morris instead of blogs and get away with it. The people, they complain! So instead of weeping in our dressing gowns (not kidding, Kiki and I talked on the phone at half time during the game last night and BOTH of us had to wipe away at least one tear of despair and frustration) …. we’re going to talk about it. Ugh. Wish we could just pretend it never happened, like a bad exam mark or an awkward sexual experience.

THE OPPOSITION

Yes, yes, NSW folk love picking, re-picking, shuffling, then re-picking our Origin line up. But straight up, it’s a diversion activity. Queensland are good. In fact, they’re amazing. Moving Jamie Lyon from right to left centre or Eric Grothe Jr magically coming back into form for the right wing position isn’t gonna change that.

Cause Queensland is in the middle of some crazy astrological shit right now. Not only do they have Australian rep standard halves, forwards, centres, fullbacks and hookers, but they’ve had them for years. Sometimes God smiles upon a team and keeps their players in form long enough to become an Origin fighting machine.  (At the other end of the spectrum, sometimes God decides NO MORE REP FOOTY FOR YOU and you never get that chance. For example, Anthony Minichiello).

If we’re using Wayne Bennett terminology, Queensland are both a team of stars and a star team.

Sorry, had to stop typing then to vom in my mouth. Hateful though they are, the Maroons were amazing last night, as they are usually amazing. FREAKS.

THE BLUES

This part is really hard to write. We love our boys, but last night we were embarassed to be Blues fans, for the first time in our footy lives. It was awful. And not cause we didn’t support the team that was chosen (although maybe we would’ve tweaked some stuff/a lot of stuff/the front row).

More like because watching players play at 50% of their ability on the biggest stage in footy is HEARTBREAKING. Don’t pretend you didn’t see it too. These aren’t shit players, but they played like they were. Our team was broken. It made us want to cry. And we won’t blame the backs’ performance on the lack of a forward platform because it’s just not that simple. Gallen was solid. O’Donnell was fucking rageful. Weyman was …. there. But as a whole played like their hearts were broken too, and racism scandal or not, that’s painful to watch.

At least three of the Queensland tries were scored through gaping holes in the outside defence. GAPING, I TELLS YA. Never thought I’d see the day when Brett Morris jammed in on the wing and let players through for try. Not B.Moz! He doesn’t pull that shit in first grade, so what’s doing with Origin? Something is seriously wrong in the sky blue sheds.

If you rewatch the game, and see the moment when Willie Tonga runs through to pick up a loose ball and score in the second half, then you are watching the exact moment when my heart split into 85 separate pieces.

WILLIE TONGA. He had three Blues between him and the ball, and not one of them ran for it. Not one. It was like watching the Titans play the Roosters the other week … if you were a Titans fan. Enough said.

THE PROBLEM

Honestly, changing the team wholesale won’t stop the rot. For one thing, the team not having a chance to gel or build any confidence is half the problem. I am totally behind giving a few young forwards and back a taste of Origin in game three – what up Snowden! Soward! Dugan! J.Moz! – cause they have to get used to it at some point, and it’s better it’s not a vital game.

But how’s this for a revolutionary idea: A Proper Origin Coach. Not a club coach. An origin coach. How much do we have to pay to get you back, Gus? You can even have a Neil Henry-esque offsider if you like to look after the fiddly stuff! We’ll check if John Cartwright’s free. Get onto that, Intern John-John.

Even better: what about a game plan? No, not that. Bombing to Israel Folau’s wing doesn’t count as an attacking strategy any more than the wingers and centres rushing up and in counts as a defensive one. Our boys were lost and they deserve better, no?

THE HIGHLIGHTS

There’s only one, and it’s courtesy of our very own Incredible Hulk, Luke O’Donnell. According to the Herald, this is “an ugly brawl.” Whatever. No, we don’t endorse dangerous tackles, but we do endorse his passion/rage/brief moment of insanity. Leave an Origin comment and enjoy.

  • Suchy

I really hope Queensland don’t win 11 in a row. They’ll have to take their shoes off

  • http://2blogornot2blog.wordpress.com Mick

Gah. What a game. It was like watching a train-wreck. I ALWAYS watch Origin. No matter where I am, or who I am with. I do not miss it. So I didn’t want to look away, but at the same time i couldn’t watch…

The quote about ‘star team’ and a ‘team of stars’ is very poignant. NSW had a team of good players. I mean, B.Moz, Hayne, Barrett, Hindy, Ennis, they are all stars and on their day can blow the opposition away. But last night, they didn’t play to their potential and exponentially, when you have a team of stars not playing to their potential, the standard of the whole team falls into the gutter.

I was hopeful we had the passion last night after those first few runs from Weyman, but as soon as 2 tries were scored by QLD, the Blues’ heads dropped and it was the beginning of the end.

As great as the biff was (wasn’t it great to see a destroyed jumper in Origin again?), it wasn’t enough to re-ignite the Blues into scoring a miraculous comeback.

So, yes….changes. There has to be for Game 3, but I think MG is right. Next year we have to pick a young team of up and coming stars, stick with them for 2-3 seasons and build up a star team from scratch.

That star team will have to include Dugan, both Moz’s, Mannah, Pearce, Snowdown. But it also has to include 2 or 3 hard, experienced players that know what Origin is about. Who they should be, I really don’t know. but you NEED that mix.

We also need a right winger. Really. Does NSW even consist of a decent right winger? One that does not decide to come flying in for ‘try-saving’ tackles off their wing at inopportune times.

    Sigh.

Another year. Another loss. Another child grows up not having seen NSW win a series.

    When will this rot END?

  • cocodmonkey

O’Donnell reminded me of a vicious dog I used to have. Watching that thing snarling, spitting and barking at a potential opponent was a thing of raw and primal beauty. The dog used to do the same thing too. Seeing O’Donnell last night champing at the bit to get at the brick faced Taylor, was the only stirring and passionate thing for a NSW fan to take away from the game.
That said, it is time for investment in the Blues. Get rid of Bellamy and his Yoda like coaching techniques and bring in a coach who spends all year working on a Blues team with Blues tactics. Let the young players grow and we will reap the benefits in a few years time.

  • Mel

It’s so hard to know what to do! But definitely the first step is sacking Bellamy for next year. I’ve said it before, how can a man who lives in Melbourne and coaches a team full of Queenslanders possibly be the right man to coach NSW!!??? Makes no sense at all. And we need to stick with a team of core players (in core positions) for a few years at least to build up that Blues team spirit.

And NEVER select Matt Cooper again. He’s gorgeous, but he’s SOFT!!!

  • sassy

I never thought I’d say it, but yeah I think hot bitch has done his dash. he’s just too old for origin. SADFACE.

  • sassy

ps I just said “done his dash”. I AM SUCH AN OLD MAN.

  • http://itscalleobsession.tumblr.com Steph

    It was beautiful :’)

As much as I love Queensland flogging the pants of New South Wales it starts to get a bit tedious after a while. We need some real competition. You guys need Gus back. Hell, you can have Wayne Bennett!

  • http://2blogornot2blog.wordpress.com Mick

    Gus? Seriously?

Don’t we remember how the self-righteous, pompous, annoying, stubborn git would divide players, officials, media and fans alike? I don’t think he’s the right fit for origin any more. Too outspoken, too critical and too….GUS

I wish Sterlo would get into coaching properly, not that throwing him into Origin is necessarily the best place to start, but you know, he’d be good at it.

But who else is out there that isn’t coaching an NRL team, but needs a job? JT? Browny? Chris Anderson?

  • sassy

nah I don’t know that it should be Gus in particular but he’s the first person that came to mind! he’s so omnipresent. it’s not like people are exactly putting up their hands for a job. I think there are probably a lot of ex-Blues who could do the job … plus I JUST THINK STERLO CAN DO ANYTHING. HE’S SUPER-SMART AND GENERALLY AWESOME.

  • Jess

As much as I love seeing QLD win, it is starting to feel a little uncomfortable. I feel like a lot of people will stop tuning in if it doesn’t become ‘exciting’ again.

A new coach would be a great start, and fixing the halves. Pearce did a good job, I feel like they should stick with him and (as much as I hate to say it) why not put Braith in the halves with him? They have a good combination at the Roosters, and you still have an experienced player and a young player. And if they want Gidley as a utility off the bench – pick someone else as captain!

I’d love to see both Morris twins on the left for the next game.

  • Kiki

Gus – self righteous, pompous…whatever! he gets RESULTS. you need someone who is a tad unhinged as an Origin coach. i wholeheartedly think he should come back.

Origin isnt about tactics or footy expertise. its about grunt and heart and the Blues haven’t had that for a bloody long time.

i was horrified at Hot Bitch and B.Moz last nite. they NEVER play like that for the Dragons. Weyman looked dizzy and not 100%, Creagh was….not at his best. the only Dragon who repped was my mans Beau Scott. just wish he had’ve knocked that hideous traitor out cold. INGLIS HATE HATE HATE.

oh and needless to say – Luke O’Donnell, i love you more than life. that is all.

  • Bec

I think the coaching decisions, people playing out of position etc was woeful. But i really think the main problem last night was the lack of commitment from the players. You should be trying your heart out for those 50/50 balls. No matter how talented the qld team, they also all put in 100 percent for 80 minutes, which is why it wasn’t closer. And it’s a shame, i was loving the physical, competitive game in the first ten minutes, but they just fell away. I really want a close game when it counts, otherwise its going to be boring. So lets bring on a new coach!

  • Bec

Oh also, Luke O’Donnell firing up is all well and good – but dangerous spear tackles and headbutts/punches while the other guy is being held by your team-mate isn’t that impressive. However, at least that shows some passion and effort, and i hoped that would fire up his team-mates, but all they wanted to do was elbow and facemash people who had already been tackled. The forwards needed a bit of that agro, the other stuff doesn’t get you points.

  • Kiki

yet if he was wearing Maroon all of QLD, including you, would be jizzing over him and waxing lyrical about ‘queensland passion’. funny that.

  • http://2blogornot2blog.wordpress.com Mick

“you need someone who is a tad unhinged as an Origin coach”

Ha. I like this. Tommy ‘cattledog’ Raudonikis then? He’s been wanting the job back for years!

  • mags

I had to miss the first half, so I was furious that I missed biffo. But when I found out Greg Inglis scored the first try I was like “OF COURSE HE DID.”

as a side note: when vossy talked to Inglis after the game and asked him about the racism thing he looked so … hurt by it that it made me super sad/feel like crying.

But seriously; why didn’t NSW pick Jamal Idris over Matt Cooper? I called him getting injured like 2 weeks ago and what happened: INJURED. I mean, if you’re going to talk Jamal up like the saviour of NSW, you might as well pick him… more than once. And whilst he’s young.

  • Kiki

i think they picked Coops because of his usually flawless defense, whereas Jamal has defensive issues sometimes.

although somehow Bellamy confused the shit out of Coops during the week and he was rushing up out of the line and missing tackles and well, i’ve never seen him do that before. I BLAME BELLAMY FOR THIS.

  • Kiki

by the way, the only QLDer in that photo i don’t want to kick in the face is Thaiday. he is just so innately likeable even when he’s in Maroon. a miracle.

  • sassy

I would hate queensland less if scott prince was in the team. just for the record.

  • Char

Cooper Cronk’s try made me soo proud of him though (:

  • Suchy

I honestly want to know why Monaghan got picked. Surely Nathan Merritt couldn;t have had a worse defensive game than he did

  • Hazy

Billy looks like he is doing the beyonce dance in the group picture.. if you like it then you shouda put a ring on it…

  • Dilemma

Similar feelings as everyone yet writing feels like a healing process…
ESPECIALLY when I have to hear bullsht all day from my usually wonderful QLD workmates TIL Origin time *sigh*

    New coach.
    New coach.
    New coach.

Chose a team & stick with it.
    Morris Twins. Soward. Mannah.

  • Tooves

I went to uni in Qld and have generally accepted the predictable flow of post-series-win text messages in the past 4 years with good humour. This years stream seemed like it was heartbound and dagger-filled and I didn’t respond for 24 hours. NSW look at best, honest toilers and at worst, the Washington Generals. Time to give some alternate forwards a chance. Stick with Pearce and surely Greg Bird, he of 2 MOM’s and a Wally Lewis comparison, deserves another shot (club form or no club form). You could be guaranteed Qld would be picking him – hell, they picked Inglis when he selflessly smashed his girlfriends eye in because he cared so much – why can’t NSW?
The other problem seems to be the selection atitude – blokes ar ebeing picked to contain Qld rather than win the game. The Qld backline are going to score points. Fact. We need to score more points than them. Sounds like I’m being feacitous but if we’re picking defenders than I think somebody ahs forgotten this. Beau Scott played OK but a centre combination of Lyon and Jennings is going to worry Qld more than somebody who stops Inglis from scoring 4 times out of 5.
As manful as Gidley is, he is surplus to requirements. We hooked (sorry) Ennis for 50 minutes just so that Gidley could get some game time.
As for yesterday’s performance, NSW just looked tired and outclassed. I was watching it London in an expats bar and had to continually apologies for my language as the attack became more desperate and more clueless.
One point on the lunchtime pub crowd in London – it was 80% Qld. Probably because people from NSW have jobs.
Oh, and one final point on Meninga – I though he would’ve learnt not to make anymore political comments after what happened last time around. But he should be sued for defamation for suggesting the NSW selectors are racist. Quick reminder on your skills Mal, footy – brilliant. Politics – rubbish.

  • Tooves

massive spelling laert on my post there – don’t red mist and type

  • Tooves

laert? another mistake. spellcheck gone done and spoiled me. anyway, back on message. footy – we’re shit and I’m sick of being shit.

  • Craig

I think Queensland must be over the Salary Cap!

  • sassy

tooves, I like to think you wrote all these comments drunk. IT’S THE ERROL WAY! we care not for spelling errors!

agreed that NSW react to losing by trying to stop Queensland attack instead of trying to match it.

  • matty

… man… I don’t know what’s more depressing… the fact we played like absolute shit, or the text I got after the game. For the sake of comparision (is that right? Fuck it, lol), I type this down.

Text: Timmy was at school and the teacher announced it was career day. The kids had to come up and explain what their father’s jobs were. One said his dad was a policeman. One said his dad was a fireman. One said his dad was a doctor. One said his dad was unemployed, and everyone laughed at him.

Timmy went up and said his dad was stripper at the Cross, and if someone paid enough, he’d go upstairs and service them. The teacher pulled Timmy out of the class and was shocked by this.
“Is this really what your father does?” She asked.
“No miss. My dad plays for the NSW State of Origin team. I was too embarrassed to say that.”

… not funny nameless person who will remain nameless… not funny at all…

BTW: Long time reader, First time poster. Love your work girls, keep it up :)

  • Sammi

I just rewatched the biff on youtube and Luke O’Donnell looks like an angry Mr Shue!!

  • kiki

I think, knowing that we’ve lost the series anyway, we should complete wipe out the current nsw team, and just start again. Babies Pearce, Mannah, Jennings, Dugon, are afterall the future of nsw state of origin, put them out there and let them experience origin.

Craig Bellamy needs to go, full stop. Everyone’ saying he’s a great coach, yadda yadda yadda, but if you look at this way: 3 straight series loss, 2 out of 5 premierships with, and I hate to say this, the best team in league, is not good enough.

Bellamy is too technical, too robotic. Players don’t need to be coached, they’re all elite athletes, they all already know all the moves. What they do need, is someone to inspire, make them want to win, NOT because 5 in a row is embarrassing, but for their state. Someone good with words, and will get results.

    + sterlo for nsw coach
+ kevin gordon as permanent right winger
    + Pearce and Anasta halves
+ our capt. on the field
+ pick a team and stick with them

    2011 is ours. go nsw.

  • sarah

i have always watched origin games from start to finish. This was the first one i have turned off in disgust/depression/rage (take your pick). i agree with Sterlo for captain, or maybe laurie daley (throwing it out there) or hell anyone but bellamy. And if we could just pick a side & stick to it for, say more than one game? radical idea i know.

  • matty

I say get J.Moz in with B.Moz so they pull that twin telepathy and score some points. However, instead of Sterlo, I’m putting out that Wayne Bennet should replace Bellamy.

Evidence: Dragons before Clint Eastwood joined up = Average team. Dragons after Clint Eastwood joined = top of the ladder baby!

Psychic Evidence for 2011: NSW Origin Team + Wayne Bennet = SUPER AWESOME MEGA TEAM! (Wow, that wasn’t a reference to a Japanese Anime at all…)

B.Moz, I know you read this blog, so seriously man. Hook your bro up!

  • Tooves

sass i wish i was drunk. i’d had, in total, one pint of beer – of which id repeatedly slammed into the nearest table as things went from bad to worse. I apologised to the nice middle-aged couple sitting there and the fella replied with ‘i understand mate, we’re blues too’

We’ve all had enough. I like the specialist coach idea although im not so sure on sterlo. i reckon laurie daley is a great option. he knows what winning at the highest level is like, and he’s done really well with the country team – esp identifying new talent. I know people want his head as a selector BUT, i reckon he got out-pointed in the selection room. Bellamy got the team he wanted, and Lozza was the most junior selector. Mal’s record was horrible before Qld… and look what happened.

And just by the by, if Mal is able to maintani hs positionafter accusing the NSW selectors of being racist…………………………………………

  • Jason Maher

2 1/2 weeks later and I’m still pissed. I generally am when NSW lose. But this is the first time I’ve felt like lighting random cars on fire. I just cannot believe how little commitment the NSW players displayed. It looked like they didn’t give a shit, like they wanted to be anywhere else (e.g. playing for the Dragons). For the first time in my life, I felt ashamed to eb a New South Welshman. Which is not good when you live in Brisbane and are watching the game in 3D at a cinema filled with maroon dickheads. (To top it off, I got taunted by a Broncos fan after pointing out the Saints were top of the ladder, so it wasn’t all bad. The smug bastard informed me that we’ll just choke again anyway. It took an effort to restrain myself.)

Someone mentioned MG stated we should wipe the slate clean and start afresh next year with a bunch of kids. MG is wrong. That should have happened in 2008. Why are the NSW selectors the only ones who don’t realise that? Here is a potential side for game 1 next year, asssuming no injureis and no form collapses. I’ve gone with a young backline, with some more experience in the pack, yet still blokes with a few years left in them:

    1. Josh Dugan
    2. Jarryd Hayne
    3. Michael Jennings
    4. Josh Morris
    5. Brett Morris
    6. John Sutton (should have been picked for game 1 this year)
    7. Mitchell Pearce
    13. Paul Gallen
    12. Luke Lewis (c)
    11. Anthony Watmough
    10. Michael Weyman
    9. Robbie Farah
    8. Kade Snowden

    14. Trent Merrin
    15. Tim Mannah
    16. Greg Bird (can cover backline injuries)
    17. Luke O’Donnell

    coach: Gus

Alternatives are Campese, Soward, Lawrence, Idris, Creagh, Douglas, Coote, Gordon, Ennis. Whichever players they go with, they need to stick with them and build a combination. And no more picking old farts. It will take us time to match Queensland, and picking 33 year olds just doesn’t cut it.
